I've been thinking of going with a Tama Bell Brass 6.5x14 snare for some time now...but...after hearing much through out the years of Potyondi snares I've finally decided to give them the light of day.

After reading the stuff on the website, I'm pretty impressed and am deffinitly interested in getting a snare made from Peter Potyondi.

The Plan:

Order Tama Bell Brass Hoops
Order the Potyondi Bell Brass shell in...something unique...like 7.5x14 or just 7x14...figured its a custom shell...so why not get a custom unique size.
Then have OCDP put it together. Get either the tube lugs or their OCDP lugs in nickel finish...50% offset. Have them do the Snare bed and put some puresounds on.

what do you think? Size wise?

that's going to be one heavy piece of metal! Why not just have Peter just put tube lugs on, and do the snare beds? His company works with those drums everyday, so I'm sure they know the best way to do the snare beds, and I'm sure they can get puresounds for you too.

Just my thoughts on that part...

otherwise, size wise, sounds good! I've got just the typical 14x6.5, and I wouldn't mind having a 7, but 7.5 might be a bit too much for me. If you think you want it that deep, then go for it as long as it doesn't cost you any more than a 7. bell brass is expensive enough as is!

keep us updated!

Good idea, why have a mass-produced and over-marketed Tama when you can have a truely custom Potyondi?

I would just have Peter do all the work, if there is a special lug and/or hoop you want he can get it, it will save you money and headache in the end. His bearing edges and beds are the best I've seen, and he has great machines to make them, far better than OCDP.

Question... why would you outsource ANY (esp to OCDP) work when Pete can do it for you?

well cuse I would get my labor done fairly cheap over at OCDP. Plus the resale value...if for some stupid reason, I don't want the potyondi anymore...then it goes to Ebay. An OCDP Solid Bell Brass snare...with Tama Bell Brass hoops and Nickel plated 50% offset OCDP lugs and a Black Trick throw off would probably sell incredibly on Ebay. I sold my 20 ply 6x14 vented ocdp snare on ebay for 800 bux to someone in England as an example.

I like the work that they do for bearing edges and the snare bed (especially) They have always done amazing work for me when it comes to edges. I trust them. If Peter Potyondi HAS to do the edges...OCDP can reshape them..its no big deal. Also, OCDP has the look I want for this snare, w/ their lugs and inovative ideas..i'm sure the bell brass would sound and look incredible!

The reason I say OCDP is becuase I have hook ups through the company so I get the labor and parts all at a very....VERY reasonable price. I would save money in the long run if I go that route.

After seeing 1st hand all the crooked and poor wrap jobs at NAMM, I would not trust OCDP to do any work for me.... cheap or otherwise.

In OCDP defense...I asked why some of the drums were like that at the NAMM show...to put it simple, the shells aren't perfectly round, thus when doing a wrap the appearence will look off. It is much more apparent when a client will order a wrap with pinstripes, to match up pinstripes on an unperfectly round shell is a bit harder to do. Though this isn't always the case with every Keller shell they get. Besides...I would never personally order a wrapped drum anyways so regardless if the wrap jobs they do are good or bad doesn't affect me either way.

Can we please stay on the subject of the thread? I'd hate for this to turn into the usual OCDP bashing/flame war that always comes up. If you don't like them, take your business elsewhere...its just that simple.

The Tama Bell Brass Hoops on the PL6514 alone will run you about $400.00. They are not cheap.

I hear ya!, if you have the moola, there are no better hoops then bell brass.

but why is that? I mean...sure I could always back out and just get the diecast hoops...but..what is the big difference in the long run? bell brass dries out the overtones more? holds tunning better? what exactl does a bell brass hoop do for a snare?

They are perfectly matched to compliment the bell brass shell in sound and add to the tonal qualities. Not to mention the wicked rim shot sound.

How much were you thinking of spending on the Custom Potyondi Bell Brass with Bell Brass hoops? The reason I ask is, there is a 90's TAMA Bell Brass snare on eBay with Bell Brass hoops. looks to be in great shape. I was just curious.

yea i was eyeing that...I currently don't have all the dough right now. I was to get the estimate for the Potyondi and then work up to it. I'd get that bell brass on ebay, however alot of things have changed since I spoke w/ peter, also not to mention that I don't have the money right now.

Peter claims that his bell brass shells are absolutely pure solid Bell Brass. He claims that the Tama Bell Brass is more of a brass shell then a full bell brass shell. That got me interested.

yea.....

You should PM SLIPKNOT1 , Will. He owned a 90's Tama Bell Brass (PL6514) and is very knowledgeable about the shell manufacturing of it and its tonal qualities vs other snares that claim to be the next coming of the Bell Brass. He also has a hybrid OCDP Bell Brass Acrylic snare.

I think that's a awesome idea!!...... i mean, having a peter shell, Tama hoops and OCDP to finish up the deal.... a TRULY customed snare.... i wouldn't mind it
and on top of that, it's a BELL BRASS!!... one of the most $$$$ snares.. and it sounds great too!!

keep us up dated dude.... and if people say they did a bad job about the wrap, who cares, you ain't wraping your bell brass, as long as their craftmenship is good!
