I recently bought a Pearl Wood-fiberglass Kit on e-bay, and I wish to seek any knowledge that anyone may have for me about these sweet drums.

In the late 60’s big advances were made in amplifiers and PA systems, and drummers were looking for ways to keep up. It was discovered that things like leaving the reso head off ( Later concert toms ) or painting the inner shells would make the drums louder. Custom shops took it farther by lining them with fiberglass.
And in the early 70’s Pearl started doing it on a industrial level, hence the Wood-Fiberglass line...
If possible please post pictures, it would help to identify and date them.
Thanks,

My friend has one with the concert toms...Ugh, not to my taste at all. Doesn't sound good (he isn't the best tuner though) and I just don't like the look of concert toms at all.

Many bands used them in the 70's. Peter Criss used 2 Pearl fiberwood/glass kits in 1976'-1979'. It was actually the same kit and re-covered. Originally a white honeycomb wrab, then recovered in black mirror chrome.
The Fiberwood/glass kits sounded big, very phat warm with lots of projection.
Too bad these old pic's are crappy quality and far away.

I think you might actually be surprised how good ( and loud ) concert toms can sound when fitted with decent heads and proper tuning.
I expect they might even make a comeback someday... Something manufacturers would undoubtedly embrace.
Less processing/part count = manufacturing cost reduction.
Less cost = less retail cost ( or at least maintain a current price point to avoid inflation )
Less retail cost = more sales.
---------------------------------------
As far as looks, that’s very subjective ( and easily influenced by good marketing )
---------------------------------------
Who knows, we may even see 14 inch deep bass drums comeback someday:)
