Ok, I've been told this is a Pearl President...and it does say President on the badges (but doesn't say Pearl anywhere). Also, some of the hardware sure looks like Pearl hardware of the mid to late sixties, but again...it's pretty hard to make out exactly what it is...any ideas?

Configuration is 20"x14", 13"x9" and 16"x16"...looks to be 9 ply shells.

Pearl made a multitude of different kits under different disguises, my Mawin is made by them but doesnt say pearl on the badges, so im assuming yours will be the same situation .

I'm sure gene will be along tomoro and clarify things.

Thanks man, I'm looking forward to finding out exactly what I'm dealing with so I can restore it, it is in a shocking state of disrepair.

do you have any idea where the other rack tom is?

Jonas Sperl

No, absolutely no idea, it wasn't looked after well so I guess the tom could've ended up anywhere. A lot of parts are broken, or missing, the only thing that's actually of good use is the shell, everything else needs major work.

I bought it off a guy who had no idea what he was selling. I didn't actually see it when I bought it so was just going buy ear, but even if it isn't a President, it was still a sweet price (NZ$150, so maybe US$100) for a project-kit.

What I think you have there is a President model from the English company “Dallas”.

Your lugs, wrap and badges definitely don’t match the Pearl Presidents. Check out this link where you can down load a couple of vintage Dallas catalogs...

It’s an very interesting kit and It should clean up nice! And only having one tom tom might be an advantage because you can take the least rusty bits from both mounts to build one good one!

I'd be interested to see what Carl thinks.

Cool, thanks. I've taken it all apart to refinish it, so I'll find a lug and see what it says. Thanks man.

I've had another look at the Dallas catalogues, and also at my hardware, and none of it says Pearl, and it does have certain similarities with the Dallas range, so a logical conclusion would be that it was in fact a Dallas President.

Any ideas on how rare/valuable/collectable they are?

????????

They seem pretty obscure, but perhaps some of our forum friends from England may know more?

Or perhaps you could do a on going Dallas Ebay search until you get a feel of their value...

I still think that's a interesting wrap, I hope you can save it!

No, sadly I don't think it's salvagable. There are a lot of deep cuts and scratches, but more so, around where the hardware is attached to the shell it's beginning to crack. Also, there's evidence that there were stickers on parts of the shell at some point, and somebody has tried to remove them with something sharp and made a whole load of cuts, scratches and scuffs so it's pretty bad.

Thanks for all your help Mr B. :)

My plan is to rewrap it in White Marine Pearl. I'll also get all the rust removed on the hardware and have it all the chrome replated. Then some new skins it'll be a beautiful sight :D

I wouldnt put THAT kinda $$ into it..You'll never re-coup the $$ when you sell it.. If you dont jack up the covering, I'll buy it off you..Be careful man...that stuff is glued all the way around, and the shells will rip like paper...It's also flameable so use low heat when trying to remove it..It can blow up in your face..

Firstly, I was playing on it with really badly tuned, old heads and it sounded good, a lot better than my well, better tuned Pearl Forum with new heads!!! (No offence...I do love my Forum dearly, it's put up with a good 7 years of my playing :p )

As far as it's resale value is concerned, I'm not worried at all. For one, the vintage/2nd hand market in NZ is a lot different to what you might expect in the States. People generally sell things for either a lot less than they're worth, or con someone into paying a lot more than they should! :p Besides, I intend on keeping it for a good long time, and I want it to be playable (as in playable comfortably, which it is not at the moment) and look good at the same time so it's not wasted money as far as I'm concenrned.

I've already started taking it to bits, removed the wrap, and will get the bearing edges redone soon. Actually, the covering wasn't glued on at all!!! One end of it was taped to the shell, with a piece of tape no larger than 2"x1"!!!...and then the other end overlaps the taped end by about 1/2" and the overlapping parts are glued together.

I parted the glued area carefully with a knife, and the whole thing just fell off!!! The two tom shells I simply just cut it in the right place, and again, off it slipped. Shell is still in perfect condition except for the bearing edges, which I suspect were never well done to begin with.

Seriously??? It's in terrible shape, but if you want it you can have it.

Oh, by the way, I will be getting my hands on a vintage Pearl (this one actually says Pearl in bold letters on it :p ) at some stage soon. It's just a matter of getting it shipped. It won't be attacked quite so violently, in fact, I don't think I have to touch it all which is great. Just thought I'd let you know Carl. :D
