I show up to work yesterday and notice a Supraphonic in the garbage. I ask what's wrong with it and apparantly the shell is cracked. I look at it and there are no cracks, just a small dent by where the throwoff is. It is missing hoops, a throw off snares and heads but nothin' like a free COB. The shell and lugs are both super (or should I say Supra) clean. haha :)

Pics of it man, good find though. Are you sure it has no defects? I'd just give it a proper good check over, make sure you don't get screwed over buying everything for it to fix it up.

Put a magnet to it. If it slides off, it's brass.

No, there is much more to it than the magnet. The aluminum/zinc alloy shells are not magnetic either and those consist of about 90 percent or more of the Supra-Phonics produced.
Part of being able to tell what the shell is made out of is by how old it is. Most of the first Super-Ludwigs (late 1950s models) and Supra-Phonic (early 1960s models) were brass shells. As the price of raw brass went up, Ludwig went with the aluminum/zinc alloy shells. They did start with just aluminum, but even it went up in price too much. There are supposed to be steel shell Supra-Phonics that were made too.
Another way has to do with the bearing edge "lip", it is different on the brass models than the aluminum/zinc alloy models.
The final way to tell for sure is to remove a lug and bore-out a bit of the shell material from the holes where the screws go into the shell. If it is a yellow/brownish color, it is most likely a brass shell.

I to ended up getting a early 70's supra free. A guy at work had this thrown together Slingerland kit that he wanted to get rid of. I bought the kit, Bass, snare (supra), and 2 toms. High hat with B8's, 20 inch b8 pro ride with stand, 16 inch crash with stand, Pearl snare stand, and Tama (cheep) base pedal. Paid $250 for everything, the drums were in realy sad shape. Sold the Slingerlands for $250 and kept everything else. So I got the supra, hardware and cymbels for free :D Oh ya a throne also. The supra has some pitting, but man does that thing sound GREAT. The deals are out there, some times you just got to be lucky

Unlikely it's COB as CGC says. The Ludalloy shell is much lighter, and is seamless, while most of the COB models have a seam. Also, generally only the earliest Supras have a crimped snare bed. If the drum has really wide beds, it's probably Ludalloy.
Like CGC said, the real brass Supras have a curled under edge flange.
Don't be too upset if it isn't COB. The Ludalloy Supra is a great sounding drum, and has fewer high overtones.
If you need lugs, consider getting tube lugs. They will open the drum up a lot, and a Ludalloy Supra will tend to sound more like brass.

It has the seam, and it is pretty light.
Either way it will sound wicked.

You should post pictures of the shell. Most of the Ludalloy drums with a seam have a reinforcing plate. The seamed aluminum drums were mostly prototype Acrolites that came with aluminum hoops.
