Sitting next to me here is an old Pearl Maxwin snare, steel 14x5.5. Given the age, it's in decent condition, however the strainer is completely busted beyond any hope of redemption, hoops and tension rods are missing and I may have to replace some of the lugs.

My question is, is it a safe bet to buy modern snare components and have it fit? Export hardware, such as the strainer and lugs look appealing for it, but will there be a fitting or mounting issue? I'm not too worried about hoops, I know that's not an issue, but its' the stuff that actually mounts to the shell that makes me wonder.

it would be better to stick with vintage parts for that snare, but it is also easier to get newer parts for it.getting newer hoops wouldnt be a bad thing..keeping the stock lugs would be good to do.tension rods are replacable.if the hardware is in that bad of shape, than i would try to browse ebay for a bit or search "vintage snare drums" on yahoo and see if there is any places selling older Maxwin hardware..I would also PM Carl and see if he may have anything under his posession that he would be willing to part with.i recently picked up an old pearl snare, and i have to possibly do the same thing..you would have to measure the lug spacing and find lugs that were the same spacing as your older vintage ones..also, you will need to do this for the strainer as well.

I still have what's left of my old Maxwin snare lying around somewhere (all I have left of my first ever kit!). I'm pretty sure there isn't a complete set of lugs and what there is may be in need of some effort to clean up but if you need them PM me. Obviously shipping from the UK will cost a bit but if you can't find what you need locally...

I also have the strainer but I forget which part is missing from it. You may be able to build one working unit from it and yours?

As long as the spacing for the holes is correct..you don't really need to use the Maxwin lugs.
