In case anyone is interested I thought I’d post the oldest Pearl catalog in my collection...
I had scanned it a while back to send to a fellow collector and in honor of the new vintage section I thought I’d do the same here. It’s different from the '69 pdf download in the Pearl history section.

Check out that dreadful hardware and those no name endorsers......Big Change.

Pearl didn't really become "Pro" until the 70's...the "annoucement" of this was when Ed Shawnessy started sporting a killer double bass kit (in white) on the Tonight Show

My first throne was a Pearl.

Pearl should offer some of those colors on the Retro Masters.

Wow, I didn't realize that the old Pearl red-sparkle kit my high-school owned was THAT old. I played those in jazz band.

Yes, those tom arms were horrible.... they always slipped. We ended up just letting the toms rest on the bass drum. Its not like they sounded any worse that way anyway. These were pretty dreadful sounding drums, although the heads we had on them were good old Remo black-dots which didnt' help much.

Unfortunately ( unless your buying ) the old Pearls don’t go for much on Ebay. A average 3 piece usually goes in the neighborhood of $125-$200 USD A 4pc set like your son’s in very good condition and with that less common Agate wrap might fetch $500, and being a Presidents series will also add a little value. The highest price I’ve seen ( last June ) was $790.00 for a super clean President 3 pc in the rare Tiger-eye wrap.

I’m pretty sure the Red and Blue sparkle kits sold in the 60’s and 70’s Sears catalogs were low end Pearls... As I recall they didn’t have badges.

I actually used a 709 Standard for 29 years. For the last few years it had worn out to a point that it became “sloppy fast” But in fear it would break I recently bought a NOS Pearl 201, Lets see how long it takes to wear that one out!

Yep, 3 pages of endorsers by 1973 including good old Ed. There’s even more in a ‘75 catalog I own. I guess it’s fair to say that was the start of the smart marketing that was used to make Pearl the company it is today.

I would very much like to see catalogs from ‘66, ’67, ’70, ‘71 and 2 if anybody out there has any? I just reviewed my own modest collection of 10 and realized that I do have a 3 page sales brochure that must be ‘68 or older...? I’ll scan and post it soon in case anyone wants to guess at it’s actual age

And yes that hardware was pretty bad, the high hat stands in particular were just nasty. I did find that if I took 10 lb. weights from my barbell set and slid them onto the bottom section of the cymbal stands that would help keep them upright. :p I updated to Ludwig “Atlas” stands around 1977 and still use a couple of them.

Here’s an old 2 fold Pearl sales brochure that I wondering if Carl, Gene , anyone might want to date...? I believe it’s ‘68 or earlier because of the wooden bass hoops and consolette type tom-tom holders. It has an unique “psychedelic style logo which I’ve saw several months ago as a badge on a Ebay snare. I should’ve bid, and wouldn’t be surprised if Carl did! :p
