Wow - nice kit. And its soooooooooooooooooo WHITE !
The only place mine looks that white is under all the hardware. When I pulled it out of the cases earlier this summer to set back up I also pulled everything apart to clean and upgrade. Its really noticable how the bar atmosphere (smoke) really discolored the wrap. I never played it in a bar setting, but the guy who owned it before me played out quite a bit.
You have a beautiful set up, good job keeping it up like that.

I bought a 1966 Pearl President, in red sparkle. 22, 13, and 16...gonna get to see it for the first time next week when it finally arrives. Shall post some pics, then a massive restoration project.

Also own a 1974 black and white swirl Ludwig Vistalite 14"x5" snare, and just bought a mid 60's 21" Zyn ride.

One could say, I've been bitten by the vintage bug :D I keep looking for more and more.

My 70's Maxwin................. naked and vulnerable  .

this week i am buying wrap for it, probably aqua sparkle, but still undecided.you can see the 6" tom in the background, thats the original colour of the kit, but the wrap was badly damaged on most drums so i decided to strip it completely and give it a new coat , so when its done i'll have a right funky kit ( all single headed ) in sizes :- 22/16/13/12/8/6

pending my re-cover job, i should have this finished in a week or 2, i'll post the result when done

why is there a flat side on the wood hoops?

So you can get the toms closer and tighten up the set-up, if AnimalGLX changed the location of the Opti-Mounts then he'd be able to get the toms closer.

i've had this czx studio BIRCH kit which i purchased from a friend about 6 years ago. i was told the kit was from '93 and was just wondering if you guys knew any more details about it... i've heard that it was a fairly expensive kit when it was first introduced, any idea how much it sold for? or any other details?

thanks!!

Good Afternoon everybody !!!

This is my gear (currently not in use becauseI´m taking a break from making music due to the shortage of my freetime :-() . It´s a 1983 Pearl ELX. The only changes I made are the ISS on the Racktoms and the black bassdrumhoops because the old ones were dented and scratched. The matching snare is now equipped with Pearl superhoops from an old steel freefloater (bought them on ebay for just 4 EUR !!! :-))

I bought this set for about 350 EUR in 1993 from a guy who stored it in a cellar for about six years and ist was in a quite bad condition (dirt,rust,etc...) Apart from this the drumheads were bashed and the cymbals who came with sounded like fryingpans..... After an entire weekend of deassembling, polishing and reassembling the kit was in a quite good condition again...

In 2000 I found my brass freefloater (hex lugs made in japan) for 75 EUR (!) in a newspaper announcement and in 2002 i bought the steel spareshell off ebay for 50 EUR.

The last thing i bought was a matching 8`` tom I found on ebay. So if anybody has an idea how to integrate it into an offcenter tom-set please drop me a line.

OK.... talked enough now... here are the pics:

Sorry for the crappy images. These were taken a year or so ago on my cell phone cam. I'll have to take some newer pics with my dig. cam. sometime soon. Also, I have several drums that are not shown in these pics: second 24" kick, 22" kick, (2) 18" Floor toms (one converted to a Jungle Gig kick), 2 extra 11X13 toms, & a second 12X14 tom. I have some of these extras set up in a smaller kit configuration right next to the big kit you see in the pics for my students to play on.

AnimalGLX: Your kit is one of the finest looking kits I've ever seen! I'm a GLX nut & I've ALWAYS wanted a natural maple set of these. Those are super sweet bro! I actually exclaimed out loud when I saw your pics of that kit! Very NICE!!!!

DrumBoo: I've always loved your GLX setup with the flames on them. Is that a decal or a custom paint job? In any case they look great!

I also have a vintage Rogers kit, but since they're not Pearl, I'll save them for another thread!

My MLX kit was likely manufactured around 1988 to 1990. The first rack tom is an MMX. Sizes are 10, 13, and 16. The kick is 16x22. The 6.5 snare was originally steel shell so it has Super Hoops instead of cast hoops and no snare tension adjustment on the butt plate side. The snare shell is about 3 years old and was signed right after I got it by former Pearl endorser Richie Hayward.

Carl: Maybe you can give me some guidance. I have been a Slingerland guy for at least 40 years. Last year (2005) I had the opportunity to pick up a Pearl kit from a recording studio in NC. Pearl Professional MX Series in natural maple as follows:
22 /10 /12 / 14 / 16 shell pack, no snare or stands. The finish was pretty rough, so I had the shells professionally refinished in satin nitrocelluose lacquer. All of the chrome was in good shape, a minor cleaning was all that was required. I acquired new 1000 series Pearl stands, Eliminator pedal, hat stand, tom posts, etc. All of the shells retained their original badges with serial numbers. I believe this kit to be mid-eighties vintage. Is there a contact at Pearl that can match serial numbers to date of manufacture? Thanks.

My present practice kit. Lots of old stuff. :)

Pearl drums purchased in 1980 (except the 2nd floor tom, that is a recent Session series drum. Snare is my first drum, a 1969 Ludwig. Hi hat stand is 1980 Pearl. Cymbal stands on the floor tom side are a 1980 Pearl, 1970's Slingerland and 1980 Ludwig from front to back. Snare stand and cymbal stand on the hi hat side are 1970's Slingerlands. All items were purchased new.

Jim,
As far as your serial #'s..They aren't going to be on file..The only SN's kept on file are Masterworks..Sorry bro..MX's are pre Masters.Gene Okamoto can give you the exact heads up on them..He sits in an office full of archives..I sit in my den with nothing but $100,000 worth of Pearl gear...hehehe..PM him..He's a great guy..

JBRANDT!!!! how do you make your brackets, lugs and all the hardware so clean and shines?????? Is it a new one? Pls teach me.... Mine is very rusty!

jbrandt
02-22-2006, 07:41 AM
No secret - all the hardware and chrome was beautiful when I bought the kit 25 years ago, and it never got to looking bad. I have always keft the kit in the basement and have always controlled the humidity in all the living space of the house, but I have never really done anything to the chrome.

I wipe all the stands down with WD-40 every six months or so and then dry them with a clean cloth. That seems to make them behave well. When I replaced the shells, I did wipe all the lugs but never polished them or anything and didn't have to clean off any rust.

Maybe they made better chrome plating back then, but it has always looked good. If you look close there is an occasional pit or place where the chrome has been dinged - especially on the original hoops which I replaced. But I never got anything that spread or coated any large surfaces.

Pearl hardware = the best IMO

Pearl Extender in Orange Flash circa 1982...
WOW! I just bought this set on ebay this morning (3-10-06) from a guy in GA.
I've noticed that several others in this forum have been previous owners, or there are several identical Orange Flash Extender series out there in this configuration. It looks like the floor tom legs have been repaced with new ones, but other than than I bet these are the same drums as have been shown in this forum.

It is great seeing all these old pearl kits I would dream about as a kid. I collected the catalogs and bitterly had some kit bought from a sears catalog. I actually made fake Pearl badges and glued them on, to bad no pics. What can I say the 70's were a rough decade. So angry white boy, what do fiberglass shells sound like anyway!?

my MLX... 26", 18", 14".... no idea what year they are from. the steel snare is long gone and a 1980's 14" x 8" free floater has replaced it. still sanding down the shells and preping them for paint.

Unfortunately, I don't own these anymore (sold them in '92); this was my first "real" kit, and certainly the largest one I've ever owned.

Late 70's or early '80's "All Maple Shell" Concert Tom kit:

6/8/10/12/13/14/15/16 rack toms

I purchased it used in '86; I'm guessing the kit was somewhere between 5-10 years old when I got it. It was in great shape; some crack head (was crack even around then?) was selling it in the local classifieds, he said he needed th money for "other things"...I paid somewhere between $1000-$1200 for it, including all of the hardware and cymbal stands! That was a great deal for that kit at that time. In 86 I was in the 12th grade and bought an export set that I paid almost that much for and was made out of particle wood shells! nasty.
The high end Pearl kits in the 70's and 80's where made in the U.S. and costs TONS at the time. I would compare them (relatively)to MW prices today

Good evening everybody !!

@ Nils: This Kit is an 1982/1983 ELX. Until 1983 the ELX series had 10 lugs on the bassdrum and was available in traditional and so called "power" sizes.
A matching woodsnare with a parallel-strainer(!!), 10 (!!) lugs an an internal muffler belonged to these kits as well.

Available colours were red, green and brown.

By the way:a brown snare has been sold on ebay for about 60 EUR as well...

I have exactly the same kit apart from the fact that the one on Ebay has traditional sizes and mine has the power sizes.

I just added ISS-mounts for the racktoms and I really love the sound of it.
Other Modifications are black bassdrum hoops (the old ones were dented and bent) and power hoops for the snare.

P.S. I watched this auction as well and I´m pretty angry for myself because I missed it !!!!!! And I wanted a 2nd floortom so desperately !!!!
It took me 10 (!!!) years to find an 8´´ tom on ebay !!!! How long will it take until i find such a kit or parts of them next time ????

Thank you for your answer. I was searching for a set in traditional measures, but the old Rogers and Ludwigs were too expensive for me.

Do you think that this set was a good idea to make "old style" 70s music (Jimi Hendrix, Led Zep, The Who, Deep Purple)?

Were can I get more information to the set?

I've had this kit for 20+ years (originally purchased from a family friend so I think it's at least 25 yrs. old). I think it's a "Pro II Series" - it has maple shells, gauger rims, & sounds fantastic.

hey alcatraz, i do the heel toe thing too

i have an 80's pearl export series drumset that has the flattest, most like plain red color in the world. I very much dislike this kit, but the drums dont sound too bad on it. I'm pretty dumb and decided I was going to just take the wrap off of the highest tom (it has 5 toms) one day, assuming the outer wood ply of the shell was like.... a light colored hardwood at least similar colored to maple, boy was i wrong. it was like the dirtiest looking piece of wood i've ever seen, and the drum is in pieces to this day. anyway, i dont have a picture of it on this computer or id post it. I kinda bought a dw kit on ebay 3 years ago and the drumset hasnt seen any sort of rock show or anything since. just practicing. if i took care of the drums again i'm sure they'd be pretty decent drums, i'm just too lazy. here's a picture of me with my real drumset.

and IM not just talking about him 1st leaving Kiss..but it is true when Kiss became huge in the 70's, Its a fact that Pearl's drum sales sored..went right threw the roof.
and it attracted other big rock drummers as well....when I was 11 I had a Ludwig kit,and when I saw peter, me being 11 I had to have a Pearl,oh I have had other kits but I have been playing Pearl for 31 years, and I'am a full time pro and still use Pearl on the job !!...and Pearl has never let me down......thanks Pearl for Making great Products !!!!

Hey everyone,

Here are my vintage Pearls! I'm eager to know what type and how old they are... I'm guessing about 1970 or so?? Not a bad kit, sounds quite good (the snare isn't great) although unfortunately the wrap has shrunken quite a bit around the lugs. Snare pictured is a '57 (or '60?) Ajax.

I agree with you. When KISS first started out, no drum company would give Peter an endorsement except Pearl. So he was tried and true with Pearl right up to his first departure in December 1979.

With a 17 year layoff, Peter wasn't in the spotlight (as a preforming drummer) until the reunion tour in 1996. Peter Still Played a Pearl kit (MLX Chrome and Black).

It wasn't until 1997 for the Psycho Circus tour, that Peter started playing DW (with KISS). Peter had been playing DW's since 1993 with his side projects (CRISS and the Bad Boys of rock Tour Peter and Ace).

It was Peter that got me to buy my first set of Pearls in 1977 also.
Peter can choose to play whatever he wants, Eric Singer is keeping Pearl in the KISS family so its still all good! :D

Iced Oranges, Welcome to the Forum!

Looks like you have a 1969-’72 Pearl “Valencia Outfit” with “Tigereye Pearl" wrap. This was the entry level kit at the time.

It sports the first version of the “Free Adjustable” tom mounting system introduced in ‘69. This simple arm with a single set screw was quickly replaced (1970) with a bent arm with 3 or sometimes just 2 set screws. However sometimes on the lower end models they would still use left over outdated hardware. This model was discontinued after ‘72.

It’s interesting that the Valencia Outfits, Junior Outfits, and metal snares of this era still used the old pre 1966 oval vent badges. All other models used nailed script badges until ‘73.

Cool Kit! Tigereye is one of my favorite wraps, it’s a original that didn’t copy any other company.

Aquired my set in 1982 when I was in high school. It was a Pearl Black leather 5pc and a 3pc Ludwig set a neighbor had combined to form a monster set with 3 roto-toms. The Ludwigs were recovered to match the Pearl set. In the years I have owned my set I have gone thru numerous hardware set-ups. A gibralter rack is the lateset. The Ludwig tom and floor tom were smashed by an ex-girlfreind. Have no idea what year they are but I suspect somewhere in the mid seventies. Loud drums. I definately use ear plugs when I play. Everyone tells me my set is loud. I've thought about replacing her with a new set, but now I would never part with it. She looks old and used but I never have seen another set that came from the factory in black leather.

Thanks for any info/bro/pics/links anyone has to this year of drums I have been wondering for a long time what year my drums were.

Take it easy.

EDIT: My work computor will not let me download my pics of my kit so I will download some later when I get home.

Cannot upload pics because i am getting laid .

Just kidding, my home computer won't work either.
If anyone has any info on these drums it is very appriciated.
I cannot load pics but I can tell you they have hammered on logos with the newer logo. the hardware is the ball type with the 3 set screws on the ball.
large crimp type tom mounts, not the set screw type, but are the hexoganal type of bar, with a larger t-bolt crimp system for the height and length ajustments. anyway.... the year is in question... any help would be great...

Welcome to the Forum!

Starting in 1975 Pearl had a wrap option called “Black Leatherette” It looked a little like black Nogahide upholstery. The tom mounts & badges you describe also sound consitant with Pearl’s 1973-77 style.

I hope that helps?

Can I e-mail you a pic so you can post it for me?

1960s Stewart Drums, ............... a Pearl stencil kit. I picked these up for next to nothing, did some minor restoration work, packaged them up with some PowerBeat cymbals, and gave them to a neighborhood kid for christmas 3 years ago. They were destroyed in a house fire last year. But they were nice. The lugs said Pearl on the inside.

Thanks Carl for giving me info on it a while back. I notived you had a matching snare for it in one of your many snare collection pictures. I got it with a chrome snare that had the same style badges. A good kit, but the bearing edges are pretty beat up. I retro fit it with newer hardware. It is definitely a players kit...not a collectors piece.

Pics? Pleeeeease :D

Pearl CZX were Pearl's "flagship" series in the late 80's/early 90's, and were 10 ply/8mm (toms) 12 ply/10mm (floor toms + bass drums). Maple drums with an outer veneer of Italian birdseye maple, only available in #300 Champagne finish. In '92/'93 pearl introduced the SZX series (same ply/mm config, but in birch, and available in Midnight Quartz and Crimson Quartz). At the same time the CZX (maple) series were available in a few other finish options: Sheer blue, Amber, Sequoia Red (all over birdseye maple) and Piano Black.
The CZX kits in Champagne finish are rare, and a CZX kit in one of the other finishes is SUPER-RARE (I've got i pic of a Sheer Blue CZX kit, and a pic of an Amber CZX tom, but that's all I've ever seen of a CZX kit with one of the '92/'93 finishes). Take good care of her mate :D

Do you know if they have a model name or just Pearl with the fiberglass tag?

I recently purchased this 70s Pearl maple set in pretty bad shape. I took them all apart and cleaned them up. They came out pretty good but I have to redo all the bass drum hardware some day. They sound great.
Today I found the exact same set in perfect condition for real cheap. I like the sound of these so much I may spring for them and make a double bass set.

Welcome to the Forum,

The Bass hoops, lugs & Tom mounts place it as 1969-’72. The badges are from the end of that range, so its likely a ‘72.

The wrap is either Dark Pearl Blue or Pearl Blue, check this link where you can download a 1969 catalog for reference.

22x14 kick
13x9 rack
16x16 floor

Also had a 14x5 steel/aluminium snare with it aswell, the strainer only allows a strap to be used on the wires and it's really annoying to attach so I haven't quite figured it out yet!

Also, ignore the kick head, it came with the kit, I haven't gotten around to switching that out yet ;)

I just bought a kit like that. But mine is in VVVVV that tiger-wrap and has the gold script badge. I'd be interested to know how much $$$ it's worth and all that as well.

http://img250.imageshack.us/img250/4656/attachmentmj2.jpg

My first kit was a mix of Apollo and Majestic. The Apollos were in that exact same tiger wrap and i've been looking for anything that matched that for a long time to be able to fill out a whole kit. Much to my surprise I walk into a local portland drum shop and do a double take at this old pearl kit sitting along the wall in the exact wrap. I talked the guy down a hundred bucks and bought it right there. The only thing wrong with it is crappy heads and no spurs on the bass drum. some of the other hardware isn't original, but i'm not really interested in that if it works better.

Now i've got:

Apollo - 20x16 and 16x16
Pearl - 22x16, 16x16, 13x9, and 14x5.5?

all in the same wrap.

Nice Score!

With the 10 “Diamond Cut” lugged snare & the 20 lug bass it looks like you got a President series.

Script badges & rail tom mount, but with metal bass hoops likely makes it very early 1969. That wrap is called Gold Oyster Pearl.

Other than what appears to be a missing snare throw tensioning knob it looks to be in very good condition.

I’d recommend not making any permanent changes to it like drilling holes for Spurs or tom mounts, etc...

Hi Carl.

Beautiful kits, by the way.

I am having some difficulty determining the Pearl Drum Kit my father purchased in 1973-1974 from a music shop up here in Canada.

I know that they were a Master model, either works or series, or even MasterCraft, not exactly sure. I do recall that the emblems on the drums were not the thin cheap tin type tags that just said Pearl on them, like the vintage 50's model I saw today in the drumstore.

They were a brass or bronze stamped tag about 3 inches long and 1 inch wide and about 2/16ths in depth, in other words, quality tags.

I am sure they were CBS Masterworks or Master Series and they were a white marble type finish, I believe Maple wood.

I am still researching and trying to find out exactly what they were, as I have no pictures or documents. The guys here say that masterworks was not out until the 90's.

Hope you can help me out here.

Thanks - Paulo Riven

You sold your BRX......................are you %$#@&^ CRAZY ! ! ! !
You know, that's not the first time I've heard that. Lemme 'splain:

Got the BRX kit, loved it. The 10 x 8" tom never really tuned well, and may have been a bit out of round, but the Masters Series are truly great, well built and high quality. That said...

Pearl loves to gas on about how they make their shells. Boiling glue into the pores under pressure, and parking Hummers on them. Wonnerful. But when I got to Chicagoland and bopped around places like The Drum Pad, where they have zillions of different kits, I began to hear things in other kits I wasn't hearing from Pearl's. True, this is stuff only you would hear sitting at the throne, but still--

See, to me, a kit's timbre is important--like a good cigar. You buy a $1.00 cigar at a drugstore, and you get a smoke. You buy a $5.00 cigar at a tobacconist's and you get an experience. Sure, they're both burning tobacco leaves, but the better cigar will have a complexity of flavor that the cheaper cigar doesn't have. Same with wine if you don't smoke, but you get the idea.

Now Pearl has accomplished what they set out to do: make a superior quality shell. But in doing that, they lost some of the shell's innate character. Stradivarius violins have a tone and projection modern violins aren't quite able to emulate and plenty of musicologists, chemists, and other scientists have been working on this for years. One of the things they found is that the wood in the Strads have open cells that act as resonant chambers, aiding in the tonal projection of the instrument. Having listened to many kits, old and new, I am beginning to see where the HC/sms process may be killing that by filling the pores with non-resonant adhesive.

By contrast, Keller shells which are said to be second to none in their tonal quality are built under pressure, though not a lot of heat. Yamaha and Ludwig are similar examples and I hate to admit it, but the tonal qualities of their shells are noticably more complex. I went to the Vintage & Custom Drum Show here last weekend and got to hear many different custom and vintage kits, and it's the same all over again. Why do you think there's so much interest in vintage kits--especially here on the PDF?

I guess I'm comparing a modern Pearl kit to the difference between an LED lamp and a regular lightbulb. The LED is more modern, uses less juice, and produces more and better light for it's size than an old lightbulb. But that old lightbulb gives a nice warm glow, and a little heat--nice in the wintertime (and great if you're a bald old fahrt like me!) and is just a bit more soothing in a room. Or, try reading a book on a computer vs. holding a paperback in your hands. The computer is certainly more techncally advanced, but when you want to sit and read, nothing beats paper.

The point is that when I compared Pearl kits to the others I found that the Pearl kits across the board, were of the best quality. But if you play an MMX kit next to a Ludwig, Yamaha, or Taye, you find the MMX is just a little flat sounding. A little less complex, a little less resonant. Sure you wouldn't park a Hummer on a Ludwig--but you wouldn't do it to a Strad, either. I wish the good folks at Pearl would listen closely to their products and then some others--especially some older kits--and see if it didn't give them something to consider.

Anyway, I have my 1972 Pearl kit, and it sounds wonderful! I miss the BRX at times, but will just update my old kit from time to time, and see if I can't bring it up to date. Maybe Pearl will release a Vintage line one day, made in a different way, that will complement their current lines. Who knows?

Monday,

You may be onto something with the glue in the cell chamber theory. The Strad is a great example BTW.

I'm curious as to how much of a factor the aging of wood is in drums overall tone. I would think that as the drum ages and dries out that its tone would have to change, as well. Less moisture inside the wood has to have an effect on the sound.

I like your idea of the vintage line, as long as they use modern hardware :)

Good luck with wrapping the kit. I think the wrap you chose will look great.

Why, thanks, CLP! Am I nuts or are you hearing something similar? I see you have a few different kits there.

Something I don't get is how stinkin' great most acrylic shells sound. Cast acrylic in and of itself shouldn't really be too good tonally, and yet look how popular Vistalites, Zickos, et. al. are these days. I heard a nicely built kit from RCI at the Vintage Show, and they were superb. Bill Zickos claims to have R & D'd the shell issue to death, and felt that acrylic was the best overall material based on its cost, ease of use, homogenous makeup and reaction to vibration. There's some folks in Japan making Titanium shells, and of course we have the Trick drum guys here, so I dunno really. Wood still sound best to me, but then I'm old...

For that matter, they had one of those glass kits at the show, and although they are certainly a Liberace-esque head turner, I wouldn't want to lug those suckers around anyplace. But for a house kit in a swanky bar or hotel lounge, they'd be a great tool to have.

Anyway, thanks for your thoughts. Anyone else want to weight in?

Yeah, I'm an old guy. I started playing in 1976 on the Tor Dor kit, and added the VistaLite in the early 80's. After not playing much at all, I got back into playing the last few years. I was amazed at the improvements in mounting systems and hardware in general.

I definitely am "hearing" some of the same things as you.

Regarding the acrylics, I think the bearing edge and heads have a lot to do with producing the sound that we like. (Wood, obviously sounds warmer to me, but I like the acrylic sound. ).

Gretsch uses the Silver Sealer, Pearl has lacquered some of their shells and used fiberglass, Ludwig used to paint their interiors. They may be others, but none are coming to mind at the moment. I think the common theme is that they were simply making the inside of the drum smooth, allowing sound to travel from top to bottom without a lot of interference from the sides of the interior eating up the sound.

If I had the tools and time I would be curious to see how something as simple as a PVC tube would sound if the edges were properly cut and hardware was added. I've heard of someone doing it with a snare. It could be interesting experiment.

My 1972 kit is Luaan on the inside, and a little rough at that. Before the bearing edges get touched up, I'll go over the inside with sanding sealer and some 400-grit garnet paper to smooth things out--one step to that vintage sound as you indicated. Maybe a bit of varnish or such after that.

BTW, a lot of vintage drums I see have outside single 45° edges on everything except the snares, which seemed to favor rounded 45° edges (NOT roundover like on Reference kits!). I'll have mine done as they were as made--outside 45°.

If I had the tools and time I would be curious to see how something as simple as a PVC tube would sound if the edges were properly cut and hardware was added. I've heard of someone doing it with a snare. It could be an interesting experiment.
It's been done; there are tons of homemade octobans made using PVC pipe out there! I dunno if they make the stuff as large as 24"* so you could make a whole kit with bass drum, but don't see why not otherwise. Heck, they're making snares out of old cast iron sewer pipe (I hope they clean it... that'd be some patina you wouldn't want on your drum! 00** ) and if that sounds good, you have to ask: just how important are the doggone shells after all?!

*edit: They do. (http://www.harvel.com/pipepvc-sch40-80-dim.asp)

Thanks, Phipper...

I used Superhoops on the small toms (10 x 8/13 x 10") and kept the Mastercast on the 16 x 16" FT to keep it focused. That worked pretty well; today I'd be more tempted to install S-Hoops (http://www.safehoop.com) all around.

The Optimounts were replaced with I. S. S. mounts on the hanging toms, but after reading Gene's posts on the proper use of Optis, it may have been incorrect installation that kept the smaller toms from resonanting well with them. The 1972 kit will wear S-Hoops with an Optimount for the 13" tom.

I've been looking at older kits these days, and in general, the big money comes from American-made kits from the '40s, '50s, and '60s for the most part. Some '70s and '80s kit will also have residual value if they are limited-issue, or associated with a band. For instance:

'30s/'40's Rogers, Ludwig, Gretsch and Slingerland do pretty well as collector's items, especially if their wrap is intact. Some of the old wraps were very classic and highly sought after. During the WWII years, metal content inproducts was limited by law, so you saw some kits with wooden lugs and rims, and thos in good condition have value. Many post-War '40s and '50s kits are prized, though some years were transitional for some manufacturers--Ludwig, for instance. Of course,'60s Ludwig kits are in high demand, though the true afionado will not want some of the '65-'67 kits as Ludwig was running night and day to meet demand and some of those mid-shift kits could be less than great. '70s Vistalites do very well, and sometimes kits once used by name artists will do well for historical value. Then you'll find '90s to early 2000s Ludwig kits fall off in value, as their quality got bad.

The point is that, sadly on the general market a Pearl President kit, even in great shape is not likely to fetch a great deal, say in the $800-$1500 range a good 60's Ludwig kit might do. What I would suggest is to check around here on the PDF, and some vintage drumsites to see if there aren't some collectors specifically looking for a good President kit. Yours looks terrific, and with a little work, might fetch a fairly good price, maybe $750 or better.

There are some fans of Pacific area kits that will sometime pay out the nose for a kit to use the components to finish a kit they themselves are working on. I've heard of folks wanting a tom, and buying a whole kit for $900 just for the tom alone! Or sometimes someone wants the hardware off an old kit. You never know, and some research can really pay off.

Good luck!

Hi Inko,

I haven’t checked this thread in a while and I’m glad to see you finally made it on-line.

Yes, that is a 1969 4pc President in my photo.

To get a feel for the value, just visit Ebay once or twice a week for a while to see what they’re going for.

Good luck!

I just got a Pink Diamond 5x14 Pearl snare with the oval black/red/silver badge. What hoops originally came on this drum? This one has a triple-flanged batter and a Stick-Saver style snare side hoop. One of 'em must be right, but I don't know which one.

Also, what's the approximate year/decade of manufacture? I've looked at old catalogs and can't find this finish anywhere with this particular badge...

Thanks!

Welcome to the Forum.

Those big red “P” badges where used by Pearl until 1966, and also continued to be used on budget models (6-luggers) and metal snares into the early 70’s.

Here’s a 1968 catalog page that shows that warp- No. 11 “Sun Set” It doesn’t show up in the 1969 catalog.

Those stick saver hoops where occasionally used on early Pearl drums, but of course in pairs. It’s likely that the triple flange is a later replacement.

Wow,

I’m glad you got the photos to work, that is a beauty!

With the matched wrapped snare it’s likely a Dyna-Max model- 1971 or ‘72.

That’s also the original snare stand, pedal, & bass reso.

Is the little drum key pouch new? In not that's a very cool detail.

Thanks for sharing!

thank you, Mr. B. I have the original matching hihat stand, just didnt have it polished in time for the bottom photo, although you can just see the top of it in the top photo. the kit came with two original drum key pouches, one with an original key in it, and the other one empty, but i managed to get an original drum key off a local dealer so it matches as well. the set has the original stool, which needs a little bit of work. the bottom part (the tripod bit) really needs to be rechromed, and the foam padding was all but disintegrated. so a little bit of money spent will bring it back up. other than that, all i did was strip it, clean the drums and polished all the brightwork. i kept the original reso head, and replaced all other heads with remo ambassodors, cos it still had the original heads on it. oh, and it also came with the original cymbals, too! however, i'll keep these for showing only, as they are pretty flimsy, and have a "unique" sound. cheers and thanks for your help. okay heres what I am playing... thought I might as well post it here because of how it started...

my kit started life as a 1968 pearl valencia
my friend Mylen bought it as a "decorative" piece for his house, and it was rarely played except by some random hack at parties
well Mylen got into a few car accidents, and had to sell his house, so he gave it to my other friend Jeff, who stored it at his dads house untill last year.
I started getting into drumming again(after putting down my sticks for a few years), and I needed a kit. But, alas, I was(and still am) broke. So he decided to give me the kit. It was in horrible condition... the wrap was stained, the heads had holes, the cymbal was cracked...
So, I upgraded. Well if you can call it upgrading. I went and bought a used tama swingstar set at my local music store, then bought borrowed and stole everything I could untill I finally ended up with this:

Hi,
New to the forum and looking for some help identifying this piece.

Was told it was a Pearl (came with a Remo/Pearl CS head), but now wondering if what they meant was that it was a "pearl" wrap drum.

If actual Pearl, any idea on model or year? Any idea besides ebay where to find matching toms?

The wood is thin ply, but really was just looking to put together small bebop/jazz set up.

tia for any help

I'm not a serious expert on 80's vintage Exports, but might be able to help a little. Color looks to be Wine Red lacquer--no surprise there--there's probably been enough of the stuff sprayed onto drum sets to fill Lake Michigan!

It's not easy to date your drums without a better look at the lugs and nameplates, and bearing edges. Pearl's drums were evolving in those days, and I dunno exactly when they went to heat compression molding of the shells. Surprisingly, these older drums often have terrific tone and resonance, that a little work can make stand out!

Oh, as to the other stuff, here's my 2¢:

Drum Fund: $130
Saving for:

Nice Snare Drum for under $400 (Suggestions?)

Consider a Concert Series snare; great maple shell w/tube lugs. If you prefer metal shells, Sensitones are quite nice, and very affordable.

(2) New crashes (Custom A's or HHX?)

Dunno; you really need to bash some at a local store, or try Cymbals Only (http://www.cymbalsonly.com) and see what they have you might like.

New Heads (Evans)

In general, coated G2s over clear G1s or Resonants seem to be the most popular around here. Clear EMAD batter over whatever reso for the bass (Interstate Music has a Pearl-logo Smooth White Ambassador (http://www.interstatemusic.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10021&storeId=10051&productId=900000221&langId=-1) that's quite good...)

NICE Throne (PP, Pearl or RnS)
EVERYONE has an opinion on this! Go try some at a store, is all you really can do. My own is a Pork Pie seat on a Pearl stand, and I like it because the foam is quite firm, and I like Pearl's quality the best of all. What you like may be very different. All the brands you mention will do well for you. Your call!

Good luck!

Can anyone help identify my drums? Bought new in 82. Still have them. What is the official Pearl designation for these. I remember "Pearl Jazz Beat" on the tag. Speckled finish inside shells. Jet black. Shell Material? Where were these as far as lower level, intermediate, upper line? They were around $600- $650 back then. Thanks (They are dusty so the flash reflected off dust in the pics. They are in good shape.)

Wow, I can't believe some of these awesome vintage kits. I really love the ones from the 60's and 70's.

Here are my 1985 MLX in wine red (what's the official color?) Got them for Christmas that year from my parents who got them from Atlanta Pro Percussion. 22,10,12,13,16,18 (Don't use the 18 and rarely use the 16)
I've used them on every type of gig imaginable since then and they're still in great shape and still sounding incredible (new hardware, opti-mounts, etc.)

Optimounts are great--IF you install 'em right! Check for Gene Okamoto's take on that.

My BRX came with them, and I hated them, and went to ISS mounts to open my toms up. Later, I learned I had installed them incorrectly, and now, I use them on a vintage 1972 Pearl kit and the toms sound great!

The short version is that you install the top end right up against the batter drum rim to bear most of the weight of the drum. The bottom end should "float" between the rim and the lug casing, to merely support the drum in position. I had installed mine tight against both rims, and that'll deaden a drum about as well as an Evans Hydraulic batter and reso head!

If your toms are shell-mounted, Optimounts will really make them sing! eBay is your friend here.

Korch, Keeno, - Thanks! It's fun to have a kit this old that still looks nice, sounds great, and is updated with the current technology.
I went to the Opti-Mounts back in 2000 when I moved to Nashville and figured I'd better have some new drums...or at least something that looked like it was from the current decade :) So, I kept my shells (with rims, lugs, etc.) and replaced everything else (rack, hardware, cymbals, etc.) Still using the first cymbal I ever got, a Zildjian '21 Rock Ride from 7th grade in '81. Sounds great, looks new, has been everywhere with me, and I can't bring myself to use anything else. Still using the Free Floater that came with the kit. It came with an aluminum shell, but I replaced it with copper in '89.

Oh, yes... What Monday317 says about the Opti-Mounts is true. Big improvement as long as they're mounted correctly.

I missed seeing this when you originally posted it last year. I also apparently missed correctly seeing the badges in the pictures you posted prior to my evaluation of your kit.

I can tell you that based on catalogs for the North American market that badge was new for 1973. And tom mounting systems were also made heavier that year for all but the low-end & Jr. models.

If your Kit was for the North American I would now say it was likely made in ‘73 and used a older tom mount system that was supposedly phased out. This type of inconstancy is not unusual for Pearl kits of this era.

Sorry for any earlier confusion.

The little “Japan” were on all of the badges in this style and has no other special meaning.
