Thanks man..I love them..expensive hobby,but hey..so what..!
Sorry!
I know, that this is not a snare from the 60s!´My guess is, that it might be from the mid 80s (and not even vintage). But since the experts (and THE expert) are posting here very often and I´d like to get some information on it I figured I´d give it at try! It´s 14"x4", the badge says "Maple Shell", the serial nr. is 335104, it has "Pearl Super Hoop" rims and I got it with an DLX kit sometimes in the late 80s. There seem to be 6 plies of different coloured wood!?
Any information would be welcome.
bigtone23
10-20-2005, 12:46 PM
It's all maple, the grain runs horizontal and vertical, causing the different color look. My maples and birches all look like that, too. Nice snare, that was a pretty high end Pearl in the 80s.
CARL PETERSON
10-20-2005, 01:53 PM
It's PRE Masters..(1983)
Nice drum..6 ply ?
It's PRE Masters..(1983)
Nice drum..6 ply ?
Does PRE Masters really mean it´s that old?
I thought the 80s and 90s were the time when the MLXs and BLXs lived and ruled. But my MLX drums say "All Maple Shell" not only "Maple Shell". And the lugs also seem to be older style. So maybe its even a little older than the MLX series. As I said before it belonged to a DLX kit in Jazz configurations. Pearl Austria was lending it to their artists touring through and near Austria. (I know for sure, that Mel and Victor Lewis played it before I got it.) So I already guessed, that it should´ve been some of the better stuff of its time.
And yes, as far as I can see there are 6 plies.
btw: since you´ll probably read this I´d like to pose one off topic question to you Carl (since i´ve the same first name I hope you´ll allow me to ;) )
Are the really old Pearl drums as much sought after in the US as the American made drums? I guess, that they should be a lot cheaper than Ludwigs, Gretschs etc.? The prices people are willing to pay for these drums seem to get higher all the time.
Thanks

Some more..
Here's my '68 Tiger Pearl snare; it's in superb shape. What kind of wood is that likely to be? Sucker sounds really great!
I also bought a '72 13/16/22 kit on eBay (would you believe $120??) that has NO pitting on the chrome anywhere! It has an amazing sound--regardless of what the wood is.
I duuno, Carl; heat-compressing the shells may make them strong enough to park a Hummer on them, but I wouldn't take a jackstand to play a gig, you know? Maybe a cold-pressure method would give the shells a better tone...

That offically should be a rather thick ( 5/16 inch ) 9-ply Lauan ( although I only see 6 when I look at mine ). A somewhat reddish color with coarse vertical running gain.
The wrap is called Tiger Eye Pearl, one of my favorites!
Did you ever decide on a color for your rewrap?

All the drums have that appearence, and I agree with your assessment. At least the outer and inner plies are Lauan, and what the rest is is anyone's guess. Maybe basswood, or poplar or some such as that. Regardless, they all sound wonderful, and the Mrs is in love with them.
The Tiger Eye Pearl wrap is funny stuff, in that the effect of depth in the material is striking, given that the wrap is quite thin--probably no more than 20-mil. Some of the material is razor sharp in detail, some is blurred--like an old-time photograph. It's really cool, and something you don't see now. There's a fair amount of bubbling in the color material, but the wrap itself has held up well, with no shrinkage. Pearl, as always, did a beautiful job with these old drums!
That said, the hardware on the snare is rather cheap, and I'm thinking of going to tube lugs, a more modern Pearl throwoff and butt, and of course some Puresound snares--Twisteds, I think. Rims will either be some Pearl single-flanges I happen to have on hand, or maybe some S-Hoops (http://www.safehoop.com). The internal muffler goes!
As to wrap, we haven't really decided yet. We like both the Black Ripple and the Antique White Pearl from Drummaker.com (http://www.drummaker.com). But they also sell some unusual wraps that are intriguing; one is Black Emerald Abalone, which looks like regular Dark Abalone (which they call Black Astral Abalone)--but noticably (and vividly) shifted to green. Another is Bermuda Blue Abalone which is a deep blue-green diamond pearl, very reminicient of the kinds of pearls listed in the '68 & '69 Pearl catalogs (http://www.pearldrum.com/02_cat_arch.asp), and quite unusual looking. Then also seel something called White Abalone, which is also known as Polar Ice, which is a sort of mother-of-pearl type of stuff. I like it a lot; Mrs Monday won't hear of it.
On the other hand, the original gloss black isn't bad looking either; it just needs replaced, and Jammin' Sam (http://www.jamminsam.com/black.htm) has a great product for that. I guess we'll just wait until we get A Sign...

If I'm not completely mistaken, you have a 1968-vintage snare. I have one in Tiger Eye Pearl, and unless your strainer is radically different, the drum is very similar.
The shells on these is "9-ply wood", as described earlier in this thread. Earlier years had wood or fiberglas or a Masonite-like composite.
If you have 10 lugs, yours is the Deluxe Model. Mine is the 8 lug Standard Model. These are excellent players; I'm updating my heads, snare, strainer, lugs, and wrap, and will use it with my 1972 kit. Even though they aren't 100% USA Rock Maple, the years on the wood give them a terrific vintage timbre.
IMHO if her shell is in round, you'd do worse than give her a polishing, slap some new heads on her and go to town!

Welcome to the forum,

-Mr. B.Not quite Mr. B; it'll be a Luan-ply shell. Pearl's literature of the time calls it "9-ply wood", and mine is definitely Luan on the inner and outer plies, with what look like birch reinforcing rings. The plies are likely to have been birch or basswood and Luan.
That said these weren't all that bad to start with, and now that they have about 40 years of age in the wood, you wind up with a pretty good shell. Maybe not a Jazz Festival-type collectable, but an excellent player just the same.
The strainer and lugs on these are pretty much stamped metal, and the snares are 12-strand crapola. Mine will soon wear a Pearl SR-017 (Sensitone) strainer, with Pearl single-flanged rims, tube lugs, and some new Remo heads. I might even go with Pearl snares, then -- ahhhhhh... the Midnight Blue Abalone wrap... What? You'd like to see it again..? Why sure... :D

Also, what's the approximate year/decade of manufacture? I've looked at old catalogs and can't find this finish anywhere with this particular badge...

I got it brand spanking new with my DX in 1984. I'm sure it was sent out with other pro kits as well. It has a good crack to it.
I used it gigging until I bought a Pearl maple snare which is a little older than that.

Hi there.
Nice looking snare...
Based on the strainer, the diamond cut lugs and what looks like 8 lugs, I reckon I can safely say your snare is a model 2314 9 ply (luan) 1969 14" x 5 1/2".

It amazing how cool these old drums were! And you can find them all over. The great part is that even the Phillipine Mahogany (aka Luann) shells sound fantastic after 30-40 years, and with a little work and care, you can build a truly superb player from them.
This one was an early '70s Tiger Eye Standard that I was going to use on a kit I've refurbed for gigging, from the same era. Unfortunately, I was persuaded to give it away as a gift for a promising drum student. That said, here it is in all its magnificence:

Very classy, I trust it is getting well used by it's recipient....Actually, no. The squab's drum teacher told him, "It's too ringy." and now he doesn't touch it. Worse, he won't hear of having an internal damper installed, a head change, or even just a muffling ring: The Expert told him the problem was impossible to correct..! Since we have relocated to Alaska, there aren't a lot of ways to work on the drum--or better, get this poop chute fired. Oh well...

X = An unknown quantity.
Spurt = a drip under pressure.
What a shame. Some teachers need to remember that there is a definitive period where a student (of anything) remains totally impressionable and usually for life.
Maybe one day you can get to show the recipient the beauty of open drums...

Maybe one day you can get to show the recipient the beauty of open drums...Well, look at the current state of the art for marching drums. All sense of resonance, tone and musicality is gone and now they simply sound like loud toys. View some old video of JFK's funeral, and you'll hear those old 14 x 12 maple-shelled field drums echo for miles.
This background is where current music teachers come from; they don't know any better, so they can't help themselves. Problem is, when they hear real drums, they have no idea how to respond. If I had fixed up an old 60's-era Ludwig field drum, this goof's reaction would be the same. Probably the best I can do is offer the lad a few bucks to buy the drum back, or find a Pearl Champion on eBay and fix it up for him.

Um by your own hand your kit and Jupiter snare are 70's and this is a 60's snares thread ;)
Love to see your kit in the thread you already started in the vintage section though!
It's all good, glad to know now that Jupiters came out as early as 73, I thought they came out in 75.
