Here's my Pearl-made CB700. I think its from the late 60s sometime, I came to this conclusion by looking for the original tom mounts and the shell mounted hardware (lugs, rims....) in old Pearl catalogs.

last year i was going through the music room because im the drum guy theres people better but i know where everything goes and how to put together a kit and all that and for some reasons others dont......so i was going through the cupboards gettin peices from each kit and replacing it(4 kits) and i opened the cupboard i found a mother load of vintage from the 40 and 50s and 30s and it was amazing like an old yamaha i couldnt tell anything else because they where in peices and an old pacific and an old gretch and i found a sabian medium ride which had one crack in it and my teacher just said oh! i was looking for that and he told me he got it as a teen and he brought it here and lost it he said it was from the 50's as well i so wanted to keep it but he said nope

here's a link for a cool shop in seattle - they've got some pretty rad vintage gear. They had some cone-shell drums a while back, don't know if they still have 'em. they always have at least 10-15 old slingerland or ludwig kids, even some leedy...they've got a few super duper old bass drums too, with like the calf skin heads and whatnot.

I wish my shop got more vintage gear. They often have Acrolites and Supraphonics, but rarely any full kits.

Sabian from the 50's? He's lying (or more likely: ill informed).
Vintage Pacific? Not possible.
Yamaha from the 30's 40's or 50's is unlikely too.

What aged kits are considered 'vintage?'
2 of my friends have Pearl Maxwins, they look pretty old, maybe late 60s/early 70's. Anyone have any info on these kits? The mounts/lugs are very similar to the CB700 kit shown nearer the start of this thread.
CARL PETERSON
09-29-2005, 11:59 AM
Vintage usually refers to 20-25 + years old..Maxwins were made by us in the early 80's..Like a student version of an Export set. Normal sizes without the higher price tag, and the hardware was thinner..Great beginner or 2nd set to own.. ;)

Thanks bro :D One of the kits has 2 sets of concert toms, unsure on the sizes but possibly a 8+10 and a 14+16. The insides have this green kinda rough surface. Any idea what this is?

They did that cause the wood they used on the shells didn't match color wise back in the day..Later on , Tama did it with the Imperialstar series (circa 1976,77),and later Ludwig picked up on the idea with the Rockers...Rogers did it too..(Grey inside)..Its a quick cosmetic fix..! Other companies picked up on the idea..Pretty smart actually .. :p

It was suppose to stay in both MW and General discussions.....
Hello again Carl,
I’ve had a question ever since both you and Gene appraised the vintage of my old Pearl Presidents back in February...?
You both knew right away it was a ‘67 or ‘68, so just what is it that makes the original 1966 President unique from any other year?
And.... How about a actual vintage section?
Thanks,
-Mr. B.

Do you or Pearl have a ‘66 catalog in your archives? I’ve also never seen any from 1970, 71 or 72. Sometime in that timeframe there was a change in lug design.
I'll ask Hook to see if we can set up a vintage section!

Well, I picked her up today!! I only paid $50.00!!! for this vintage Pearl snare. It has a remo weatherking blackdot cs batter head and a 'camco' (original?) reso head. It sounds excellent! I didn't even have to tune it!! I didn't measure it yet but it seems rather standard. I am going to rearrange my set and set it up with it and see how it all goes. I don't know what the finish is called (oyster/pearl?) the color is tan-like. Well, here she is, enjoy, comments are welcome!
ok, I'm thinking it is not oyster finish as that seems to be more of a rotating pattern, this one looks like diamonds or various size squares? Don't know what that would make it? Anyone know? The pics show the finish pretty well.
CARL PETERSON

Its (Yellowed) White Marine Pearl--Circa 1964..
^ really? what an odd name for that color... sounds like it is aged (the color) it is a little darker than the pics I would say brown/tan in color. Thanks Carl!
so "pearl" in this instance refers to the finish pattern?
CARL PETERSON
10-03-2005, 01:03 PM
Its called White Marine...Yours is just 44 years old so its yellowed..This is very typical..

10-03-2005, 01:28 PM
If you look at the 4th drum on the bottm left row,you can see how my same drum is the same color. That too is a 64' model. The one to its left is a super rare pink oyster.. ;)
Doesn't sound right Carl.. it is a consistant tanish color... doesn't look aged
is there a way I can check?
hotrodder
10-03-2005, 03:06 PM
Carl is on the money Sage, as the yellowing is an effect of age its even and consistant, my oyster pearls were originally white also but are now a creamy yellow all over.
wow, that in itself is amazing!! Like near the lugs and such, there is no difference in color.. wierd
bonzonerd
10-03-2005, 03:39 PM
Yeah that's exactly what I thought it was. That's what I posted it as in your thread. A yellowed white marine pearl.
yup.. but, I still find it hard to believe... it just seems so much darker and consistantly darker.. I don't see any shades of it lighter anywhere
CARL PETERSON
10-03-2005, 03:53 PM
Take one of the lugs off all together..The color should be brighter under the lug..Mine looks lighter cause of the lighting..Its pretty yellowed..Its consistant though..
yea, that's what I am thinking I will do.. thanks a bunch Carl!

Mr. B.. the brown in my wrap is not much darker than the brown in your logo... By the way, very cool kit you have!! What is the year on that baby?
Thanks, it's '67ish. You and some others recently Photoshopped what it might look like in a couple of wrap options, I’ve decided to go with the Red Glass.
The brown tone in my avatar is really just subdued lighting on a white reso.
I used to have a ton of Slingerland,Gretsch and Ludwig gear..I let it all go,cause I really like the old Pearl stuff..Reminds me of when I was a kid....Well..Im still a kid, just in a man's body.. :o
And by the way Sage, by Carl’s definition I guess I too get to call you Kiddo... But then again by that standard I also get to call Carl Kiddo!

Haha, that never even occured to me. I guess I just keep bumping it so when people click 'new posts' it shows up. I know I rarely look in the Masterworks section.
That being said, I am probably buying some Slingerlands for cheap. If all goes well, I will be putting them on ebay so I can buy Ludwig shells to refinish.
I want a kit in Green, Red or Gold sparkle. I want Green to make a Bonham kit, but Green is so common. I want Red because it looks so nice but my Tama's are Red Sparkle Fade. I will probably get Green, but gold still has a chance.

Green Sparkle is an awsome finish.... have you checked out my "somewhat reduced Bonham set" on the last page of the masterworks picture selection? Pearl really makes awsome sparkle finishes.... I belive they use somewhat smaller glitter than other OEM's in the trade...

Many of them focus on European drums but these can often be just as "good" drums as your average sought-after Rogers or Ludwig but without the frightening price tag!

...and if your interest does take you to European (especially UK) brands, then this is well worth the outlay!

I've got to say... there are some nice kits in the hand's of fellow posters.
I myself am on a search to find the model and year of my kit...
It's a Pearl kit(circa late 70's-early 80's), 8-piece, gold(maybe pastel yellowish), all fiberglass... the tom's are all headless on the bottom and all came with reflective/chrome heads on them.
I tryed calling Pearl to look up the serial number, but the guy says at first 'we don't put serial numbers on our drums'. So I said 'well, mine has one...' and he returned with 'we don't keep track of the serial numbers'. This seems ludicris, so I have come to this thread in hopes that someone can shed some light on the situation.
Thanks alot for any help.

That Dynasonic is a beast how does she sound??????
however you want her to sound, tight, loose, low, high.... a gorgeous drum that never fails to deliver. at the mo its sounding very 'rock' orientated, deep with lots of body with the damper against the batter, i can crank the head and turn off the damper and go to a lovely high crack with brassy overtones, great drum that does'nt choke ever.
the dyna and the luddy 400 should be on every drummers list, the 2 finest snares ever i thinks ! ( even tho my fave is the Premier COB hi-fi )
IAN
edit :- lets see more vintage drums everyone
