I have a set of export drums that is about 16 years old. They are in great shape and sound good. I currently want to upgrade to either a session or masters mrx set. I was wondering if the price difference between the session and masters is worth it. The new kit will be used for gigs and recording. Many thanks.

That depends!

When I bought my MRX kit 5 years ago, the Session series were not 6-ply maple shells like they are now. The sizes/configuration I wanted wasn't available in the Session series, nor was the #110 Sequoia Red finish. So, for me, the answer was simple... go with the MRX.

You've gotta decide what size kit you want, what size drums (specifically), and just what finish you want. If you can get what you want in the SRX, then I see no logical reason why you should step up to the MRX because they are the same 6-ply maple shell.

But, if you've just gotta have special-size toms, prefer die-cast hoops over Triple-flanged hoops, and want one of the finishes exclusive the the Masters series, then I guess MRX is going to be your logical choice.

Sound-wise, I don't see there being much difference. Slightly more focus out of the MRX toms due to the die-cast hoops, but that's it.

Many thanks for the reply. Your reasoning makes good since. Do you have an opinion on maple vs. birch acoustic or with mics. Thanks again.

Not really. When I bought my drums, I wanted a maple kit. Now that I've had them for a few years, I think I'd fancy a birch kit. Ideally I'd like to have a kit of each kind, but my finances and wife say otherwise....

hey eyedrum, i recently went from a 1993 Pearl Export to a 2002 Masters Birch. i can only say that they are the finest sounding set of drums i have ever heard. as far as tone, presence, and the ability to cut thru guitar and bass amps goes i think they are a notch above maple.

also, i have played live with the "Masters" in a rather large hall with all drums miked and the sound guy told me after the show that, and i qoute "your drums sound amazing". Pearl rocks!!!

good luck with your decision

i have the mrx. they are great. since there are more colors to choose from, go for it. i am ain't talking about sound quality, because they actaully sound almost the same. The mrx is more focus due to the die cast hoops.

let say you bought the srx, you might regret, you will someday ask yourself, why didn't i buy the MRX. you will always want to upgrade. and u can get a virgin bass drum on MRX.

Hey Guys,

Many thanks for the information. I just ordered my new MRX in wine red. I'm really looking foward to them. I agree why not get the best if you can afford it because I know I'll want to upgrade later. Thanks again.

Yes, I did have to order the kit. It's not due until July or August. That really stinks but it will be worth the wait. The configuration is the standard kit. (12, 13, 16 & 22 with a 6.5 by 14 matching snare.) I know this size isn't in vogue now but it's the size I've played with since I was a kid. Nash-Vegas, what a great town!

oh that's right, ALL mrx's are now special order :(
fear not, my brother, i've been told taht the delivery date for mine will be around mid april. once that happens, i'll post lots of pix either in the "masters forum" or "show your kits" (or both!) so keep a watch for it. wine red is a beautiful color. i've already got the snare which massmusic.net had in stock. i posted pix 2 weeks ago under the "snares" forum. my camera's nto the best so the true color is much deeper/richer than what you'll see.
try & be patient!
and yes, nash-vegas (as i call it too) is a great town. sunny, 68 degrees & nice today...
