View Full Version : I need your help, everyone!
For my psychology project, we have to come up with a list of specific lingo or terms that are unique to a certain group that we belong to. Of course I thought of drumming. So, if you guys can spare a couple of seconds to help me out, I would appreciate it. What sort of drumming-specific terms can you think of? (Eg: 'Click track', groove, chops, doubles, single-strokes, behind the beat, etc.). I have to mention that this your responses may be included in my presentation, I need to obtain your consent. If you have a problem with me using your responses and don't want your terms included, just mention that if you decide to post. Thanks in advance to my community of fellow drummers!:)

One that comes to mind is "ghost." It refers to the very quiet notes that are called "grace notes" in legit music. Sometimes it's an adjective, but more often a verb ("You should ghost those doubles to make that lick sound clean," or "The middle triplet is ghosted").
The names of the rudiments should work, too---flams, drags, paradiddles, etc. No one but drummers talk about those.
Another one that I've heard a lot of jazz drummers use is "dotted," as in dotted quarter- or eighth-notes. It's a common musical term, but drummers will use it to describe a certain feel, for example: "Listen to this chorus where Elvin gets all dotted." Meaning he states the pulse almost exclusively on the dotted quarter, implying another tempo and time signature.
